The Seattle Police Department has made “significant progress” in ten years according to the DOJ.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) asked a federal judge to lift the ten-year-long court order mandating legal oversight of the Seattle Police Department. The Department of Justice had originally instated the court order after their 2011 review of the police department found that the police department used excessive force 20% of the time force was required in a police encounter. Since then, the DOJ says that the police force has implemented a number of police oversight teams, which have since reduced excessive force among police members by 60%.
“Policing in Seattle looks dramatically different today than it did 10 years ago,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke told a news conference. “The progress that we’ve accomplished in Seattle truly provides a model for what we can accomplish in other communities as we vigorously pursue such reforms.”
